Why AI Search Engines Skip Your Business (And Three Things You Can Fix This Week)

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are now the first stop for a growing share of B2B buyers. They ask questions like "who are the best AI engineering firms in Nepal?" or "what should I look for in an AI visibility audit?" — and they get a synthesised answer. If your business doesn't appear in those answers, you're invisible at the moment of highest intent.

Most companies assume this is about SEO. It isn't. You can have perfectly optimised pages and still not show up in AI answers. AI search and traditional search use different signals.

Why AI search is different

A search engine ranks pages. An AI search engine synthesises an answer from content it can extract and attribute to a named source. The gap between "rankable" and "citable by AI" is where most businesses fall.

The signals AI search cares most about:

  • Can it extract a clear, direct answer from your content?
  • Does it know who you are as an entity — your legal name, what you do, who your competitors are?
  • Is your content corroborated by other sources, or does it only appear on your own site?
  • Is your site technically accessible to AI crawlers?
  • Fix 1: Check your entity clarity (takes 30 minutes)

AI models build a knowledge graph of entities. If your brand name is ambiguous — similar to another company, or inconsistently presented across the web — the model either picks the more established entity or hedges by not mentioning either.

    Check these right now:

  • Search your brand name on Google. Does a Knowledge Panel appear?
  • Check your Organization schema: does it include legalName, address, founder, and a sameAs array with LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and social profiles?
  • Is your company name spelled identically across your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and Crunchbase?
  • If you find gaps, fixing schema and profile consistency is a one-afternoon job that has measurable impact within 30–60 days.

Fix 2: Check whether AI crawlers can reach you (takes 10 minutes)

AI search engines use their own crawlers. If your robots.txt blocks them — even accidentally, through an overly broad wildcard rule — the model never sees your content.

    The main crawlers to allow:

  • GPTBot (OpenAI / ChatGPT)
  • ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai (Claude / Perplexity citations)
  • PerplexityBot
  • GoogleOther (Google AI Overviews)
  • Open your robots.txt file and search for any Disallow rules that would catch these. Also check that your pages aren't marked with the noindex or noai meta tag.

Fix 3: Make your content extractable (takes a few hours)

AI models extract answers from text. If your key claims are buried in carousels, PDFs, JavaScript-rendered tabs, or vague marketing language, the model can't use them.

    Practical changes:

  • Put your most important answers in the first 200 words of each page
  • Use clear headings (H2: "What does an AI visibility audit include?")
  • Write in complete sentences that can stand alone as an answer
  • Add an FAQ section to service and product pages — models frequently pull from FAQ content
  • Include your pricing, location, and specific service names in plain text
  • What this looks like in practice

We ran this test on our own site before we published the AI Visibility Audit service. We asked five AI engines variations of "who offers AI visibility audits?" and "AI search optimisation firms in Nepal." Before the fixes: zero mentions. After entity schema, robots.txt corrections, and content restructuring: consistent citations within eight weeks.

The measurement matters as much as the fix. Run a prompt grid before and after any change so you can see what moved and what didn't.

    The honest caveat

None of these fixes produce overnight results. AI search models update their knowledge bases on schedules that aren't published. Entity and credibility signals take 60–90 days to move meaningfully. Technical fixes (robots.txt, schema) can register faster, but the content and off-site signals are slower.

Anyone quoting you a guaranteed result in under 30 days is guessing. The job is systematic, measured, and patient.

If you want to see exactly where you stand, our published methodology at nxtwaveai.com/methodology covers every layer of the audit. If you'd rather have us run it, the AI Visibility Audit starts from $1,500 with a 30-day re-test included.
